MxD (Manufacturing x Digital) is a research factory used to test and demonstrate new and emerging technologies. At MxD, manufacturers can experience the digital solutions they need to help optimize operations, increase safety, and lower costs. The AT&T space at MxD demonstrates IoT-based video intelligence on a local 5G+ (mmWave) network using and Multi-Access Edge Compute (MEC), a solution in AT&T’s private cellular suite, showcasing extremely fast data transfer and low latency in several use cases.
What is AT&T demonstrating at MxD in Chicago?
AT&T is demonstrating 3 use cases using AT&T 5G and IoT – Video Intelligence:
Use case | Description |
---|---|
Production accuracy |
Manufacturers can identify product abnormalities based on defined specifications and receive near real-time notifications. |
Inventory tracking |
Manufacturers can detect the number of boxes on a shelf and receive real-time notification when a box is removed. |
Safety monitoring |
Manufacturers can create a “safety zone” in a designated area and receive near-real-time notifications to manage operations more efficiently. |
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is MxD?
MxD (Manufacturing x Digital) is where innovative manufacturers can go to forge their futures. In partnership with the Department of Defense, MxD equips U.S. factories with the digital tools and expertise they need to begin building every part better than the last.
Where is the facility?
MxD operates from a nearly 100,000-square-foot innovation center near downtown Chicago. Its factory floor features some of the most advanced manufacturing equipment in the world.
Why is AT&T a member of MxD?
To provide manufacturers with visibility into the solutions that can help digitize the factory, and foster emerging technologies, such as AT&T MEC and 5G, into key manufacturing projects via assembly, discrete and process manufacturing testbeds.
What technology is AT&T showcasing at MxD?
IoT video intelligence, which applies AI and machine learning to video footage to monitor, automate, and perform functions that help businesses drive efficiencies on a near-real time basis. AT&T will be demonstrating how manufacturers can use video intelligence to monitor conveyor belt speed and production accuracy, monitor older equipment temperatures and maintenance, and monitor inventory levels and location. All of this is powered by AT&T 5G mmWave.
What is the difference between 5G and 5G+?
5G (400+ Mbps Peak, 40+ Mbps Average) initially offers better propagation and broad coverage areas for both consumers and businesses over low-band spectrum. 5G. This service is ideal for mobile customers who need performance while on the go.
5G+ (mm Wave) (2+ Gbps Peak, 400+ Mbps Average) is a variation of 5G that offers extra speed and capacity over high-band spectrum 5G to serve high-traffic areas and places like arenas, campuses and more. While it has limited propagation and coverage it is currently available for select businesses and collaborators who are exploring new ways to unlock the significant performance capabilities of 5G+.
What is AT&T IoT – Video Intelligence?
AT&T IoT – Video Intelligence is an end-to-end, integrated solution that provides video monitoring and near real-time data analysis and alerts from new or existing video cameras, Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, and other end points located within public and private spaces. The solution includes software that aggregates data to enable insights that can be used to address everyday security and business challenges in your facility.
What is AT&T Multi-Access Edge Compute (MEC)?
MEC is a part of AT&T’s Private Cellular Suite of services. This solution uses licensed cellular spectrum (today using sub6 spectrum on LTE and combined where applicable with 5G mmWave spectrum or sub6 spectrum) to deliver a low latency, high-bandwidth solution, providing more control and flexibility at the edge. MEC enables businesses to “break out” or “peel off” designated user data, and keep it local for quicker and more secure processing/computing.
